Work has been completed in Chicago on the 1000M skyscraper, one of the last buildings to be designed by German–American architect Helmut Jahn, who passed away at the age of 81 in 2021.
Jahn was the designer of a number of world-famous buildings, such as the Sony Centre on the Potsdamer Platz in Berlin, the Thompson Centre, also in Chicago, and Suvarnabhumi Airport near Bangkok.
His final project is a 240m-tall residential tower, located at the south end of the Michigan Avenue District. It contains 738 units, as well as Chicago’s highest rooftop observation deck.
There are some 7,500 sq m of indoor and outdoor amenities, including a rooftop pool, cabanas and grills for barbeques.
The tower’s base is rectangular, but this changes to a parallelogram as it rises. The triangular planes to the north and south give the structure its distinct form.
The developers are Time Equities, JK Equities and Oak Capitals.
Groundbreaking on the project took place in 2019, but halted during the pandemic as social distancing on such a narrow site was deemed impractical.
