Texas consulting engineering McDermott has opened a 4,100 sq m research and development facility in Dubai. The centre is located near the Oilfields Supply Centre in the Jebel Ali Freezone.
It contains office and workshop space for 250 staff and will support McDermott’s subsea pipeline fabrication and installation business.
It will offer a suite of facilities for investigating welding and coatings, as well as carrying out non-destructive testing, equipment management and production simulation. The centre will also house an “S-lay” simulation area – referring the curve of a pipeline as it descends from the surface to touch down on the sea bed – and a” J-lay” rotating table for vertical pipelaying.
Mike Sutherland, McDermott’s senior vice president for offshore work in the Middle East, said: “The centralisation of our expertise will springboard the development of world-leading pipeline fabrication and qualification processes and technologies.
“Furthermore, it enables us better to service our projects and customers around the globe through increased efficiency, cost reduction and predictability of performance.”
