Tesla’s plan to build a power-grid battery factory in the Shanghai Free Trade Zone has received planning approval, reports news site China.org.
Tesla’s first energy storage plant outside the US, it will produce Tesla “Megapacks”, utility scale batteries that can feed the grid during peak demand periods.
Each unit can store 3.9 MWh of energy, enough to power around 3,600 homes for an hour, Tesla says.
The announcement follows Tesla’s purchase of a 20ha site, which it made in December for $30m.
The factory will be Tesla’s second in China.
Its nearby gigafactory, which broke ground in 2019, makes Model 3 and Model Y cars. It is now the company’s main production site, able to produce 1.1 million units a year, and Tesla is hoping to expand it in the near future.
