AC/DC fans furious at demolition of founders’ boyhood house

Fans of the rock legends AC/DC are reportedly furious that developers have demolished the boydhood home of band founders Angus and Malcolm Young in Sydney, Australia, despite it being on the National Trust List of Historic Homes.

The Young family moved into the compact, single-storey home at 4 Burleigh Street in the suburb of Burwood in 1965 after migrating from Glasgow, Scotland.

Guitarists Angus and Malcolm founded the band while still living there in 1973 when they were 18 and 20, respectively.

The house had been a pilgrimage destination for fans until developer Burwood Square Pty Ltd demolished it in recent weeks to make way for a A$28.75m residential development, national broadcaster ABC reports.

According to ABC, Burwood Square bought the house in February 2023 for A$5.8m.

‘Heartfelt regret’

In a statement to Australian media, Burwood Square general manager Leon Kmita apologised and said the company didn’t know the property’s history.

“We regret that the previous long-term owner did not share this vital part of the property’s background with us,” Kmita said, adding: “I want to convey our heartfelt regret”.

“We now recognise how deeply this location resonates with the AC/DC community and fans worldwide. We feel a strong responsibility to honour AC/DC’s legacy and to make amends to all the fans who hold this band in such high regard.

“While we cannot change the past, we are dedicated to celebrating this significant part of their story.”

‘Special place’ for fans

He said the company would salvage materials from the site and create a “special space” for AC/DC fans.

The house was added to the National Trust List of Historic Homes in 2013.

However, Burwood Council noted that did not recognise it as heritage listed or protected from demolition.
