Pioneering SME Director Sheds Light on Sustainability and Employee Culture

In a world where environmental sustainability is becoming increasingly important, SMEs can begin to feel left behind in the complexity and cost of it all. Off the back of a successful 2023, Manufacturing Matters Magazine spoke to Brett Mendell, the managing director of Thomas Kneale, about the progress they have made towards their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals.

This comes as a part of our Manufacturing Matters leadership series, delving into what it takes to be at the forefront of business developments in turbulent modern times.

Having initially got in touch with Brett following the recent hiring of a university graduate into the position of Sustainability Project Manager, our conversation led to a deep dive into the company’s experience of improving their environmental impact as well as their social, economic and ethical trade initiatives’.

This year Thomas Kneale achieved a Kings Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development as only one of fifteen organisations in the UK in this category. Despite being a relatively small organisation, the company has taken a pioneering role in ESG practices.

As early as 2015, Thomas Kneale recognised the need to differentiate itself by investing in sustainable initiatives. By incorporating recycled content in its products and reducing carbon emissions, the company has not only made a positive impact on the environment but has also gained a competitive edge in the market by offering a unique product for customers looking to similarly act sustainably.

To achieve their goals, Brett has undertaken a project of practical steps towards continuous improvement. Collaborating with networks and organisations such as the SME Climate Hub, Green Economy and Greater Manchester Business Growth Hub, the company has accessed funding and resources to support its journey towards achieving net-zero emissions. By reducing carbon emissions across scope 1, 2, and 3, Thomas Kneale has made significant progress, with scope 1 and 2 emissions already halved. Often, the key to good leadership is looking for the right help Brett explained:

“Companies are often daunted by the idea of moving towards net-zero, but if you know where to look, there is a lot of useful support out there.”

At the heart of Thomas Kneale’s ESG success is its unique approach to employee ownership. Since November 2023, the company has been owned through an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT), making it one of around only 1600 trusts of its kind in the UK. This collaborative effort between previous shareholders and employees has created a strong sense of teamwork and support within the organisation. By ensuring that everyone shares in the company’s success, Thomas Kneale has not only created a happier workforce but also increased retention rates and productivity. EOT status enables each employee the opportunity to earn a tax free bonus every year, up to £3600.

The company’s commitment to employee culture has also yielded exceptional results. Thomas Kneale has experienced a remarkable 50% reduction in staff turnover, creating a positive and supportive working environment. Investing in staff wellbeing may feel like an additional expense, but the long term impact is a productivity dividend.

Brett underscored the importance of active and engaging company leadership to listen to staff, launching initiatives such as the Living Wage Foundation’s Living Hours scheme  and partnerships with social recruitment enterprises have underscored the company’s dedication to the flourishing of its employees.

By investing in personnel and embracing sustainable practices, the company not only secures a greener future but also serves as a desirable employer and supplier. With a customer retention rate of 97%, Thomas Kneale proves that responsible business practices can lead to long-term success.
