Africa’s biggest carrier, Ethiopian Airlines, has opened its bigger domestic terminal at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport after a $50m expansion.
The project doubled the terminal’s size to 25,750 sq m and also doubled its passenger-handling capacity.
Founded in 1945, the airline says it’s now one of the fastest growing in the world.
In March it announced an agreement with Boeing to buy eight of its 777-9s, adding to its fleet of 150 jets.
Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Mr. Mesfin Tasew said: “As the demand in domestic travel is growing, the completion of this project would allow us to offer a smooth travel experience to our esteemed passengers.”
The terminal is the main connecting hub for daily flights to 22 domestic destinations.
It now has four contact gates, 10 remote departure gates, 22 check-in counters, an automated baggage screening system, and various amenities.
The airline recently started thrice-weekly passenger flights to Dembi Dollo, and opened Gode and Jinka airports’ terminals.
Plans are underway to open several additional airports in the coming months.
