Construction is about to begin on a 465,000 sq m military drone factory on a 200ha plot in Ohio for defence company Anduril, estimated to cost almost $1bn.

The plant will located close to Rickenbacker International Airport in the southern outskirts of Columbus.

It is estimated that the Arsenal-1 development will create 4,008 jobs over 10 years, the largest single job creation project in state history.

David Taylor, a local representative, said: “Dating back to when the Wright Brothers first took flight, Ohio has proven itself to be a leader in aerospace, innovation, and defence.

“This legacy continues as Anduril builds its Arsenal-1 hyperscale manufacturing facility in Columbus and plays a central role in ensuring our military is equipped to remain the world’s strongest warfighting machine.”

A press release from Jobs Ohio, the state’s private economic development company, said the plant wouldl allow the US to “restore the global balance of power”.

The project is subject to approvals but is expected to make its first products in July 2026. The facility may be expanded in the future.
