China wants to beautify its coastline by building more than 110 “beautiful bays” by 2027.
Seven cities will also become “model zones” where their coastal areas can be classed as beautiful bays.
One of them will be Xiamen, opposite Taiwan in Fujian province, Xinhua reports.
The Ministry of Ecology and Environment defines a beautiful bay as having “clear water and clean beaches, and shoals of fish and flocks of seabirds”.
The idea is to achieve “harmony between people and the marine environment”.
The work involves restoring marine ecosystems and stopping sewage running into the sea.
The 110 figure will account for about 40% of China’s major bays. A further 173 bays will be improved by 2035, covering the whole of the Chinese coast.
The legal underpinning of this policy is the Marine Environment Protection Law that came into force in January.
It strengthens the accountability of local governments and creates a zoning administrative system to control coastal development.
No budget was given for the programme of works.
