Venice Architecture Biennale 2025: Carlo Ratti invites next-gen designers to reimagine climate solutions

The Venice Architecture Biennale 2025 will take place from 10 May to 23 November 2025 (pre-opening 8 and 9 May) at the Giardini, the Arsenale and various venues in Venice. The President of La Biennale di Venezia, Pietrangelo Buttafuoco, and the Curator of the 19th International Architecture Exhibition, Carlo Ratti, announced the title of the Exhibition: Intelligens. Natural. Artificial. Collective.

In 2025 the title of the International Architecture Exhibition will be condensed into a single word for both English and Italian via the common Latin precedent: Intelligens. The title Intelligens is linked to the modern term “intelligence,” but it also evokes a wider set of associated meanings. In fact, the final syllable, “gens” is Latin for “people”. A new, fictional root emerges, suggesting a future of intelligence that is inclusive, multiple, and imaginative beyond today’s limiting focus on AI” Carlo Ratti.

Carlo Ratti is now calling for submissions from students, graduate students, and emerging practitioners under 30. This invitation seeks innovative projects that utilize natural, artificial, and collective intelligence to address the climate crisis.

From these global submissions, up to 16 projects will be selected by the Artistic Director for the Biennale College Architettura program. Eligible participants include undergraduate and graduate students, as well as young professionals in architecture, urban design, engineering, interior design, landscape architecture, and related fields.

Chosen participants will be invited to a 10-day workshop in Venice in September 2024. During this workshop, participants will refine their proposals, focusing on production and budget planning. The workshop will feature group and individual sessions, along with meetings with visiting instructors and cultural producers. It will be led by the Artistic Director and a team of curators and architects serving as mentors.

Following the workshop, Carlo Ratti will select up to 8 final projects. Each of these projects will receive a grant of €20,000 for production. The completed works will be showcased out of competition at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition, Intelli/Gens.

This initiative aims to provide emerging talents with greater visibility by presenting their work to a broad audience. La Biennale di Venezia has a history of supporting emerging talents across various departments, including Art, Cinema, Dance, Music, Theatre, and the Historical Archive of Contemporary Arts.

All proposals must follow the guidelines specified on the submission interface and must be uploaded on the dedicated space on the website of La Biennale di Venezia by 11:59 pm (CEST), 21 June 2024.
