Skanska has signed a $596m contract with the New York State Department of Transportation to replace the 122-year-old Livingston Avenue railway bridge in Albany, the capital of New York state.
The bridge has carried trains over the Hudson River since it was built in 1902, but trains have to slow down to 24km/h to cross.
It swings open to let ships through, but the mechanism is in poor condition.
The new bridge will have a middle section that lifts for ships.
Skanska will also build control and machinery rooms and install new signals.
When it’s ready from March 2028, the bridge will support faster passenger and freight trains, and give pedestrians and cyclists a way to cross between Albany and the town of Rensselaer.
