AS Roma unveil stadium designed by Populous

Italian football team AS Roma has revealed images of its new home, as imagined by American architect Populous.

A roadmap for the project is still to be announced, but a press release from the club and its designer said the stadium would contain Europe’s largest “curva sud” – the Italian term for the curved stands that surround a pitch.

The stadium, which was inspired by Rome’s history as a builder of venues for sports of one kind or another, will be located on an elevated position in Pietralata, on the northeastern outskirts of the city.

Ryan Friedkin, vice president of Populous, said: “As proud custodians of AS Roma, we are committed to creating a space that embodies the spirit and tradition of our club while becoming a global symbol of innovation and excellence and a model of environmental responsibility.”

The stadium will take over from the 72,700-capacity Olimpico Stadium, which Roma share with Lazio.
