BIM4Water’s 4D & Beyond publication launch: 4D supportive EIR and 4D LOIN

BIM4Water’s 4D & Beyond task group aims to support digital ways of working in the creation of information models and requirements for new capital delivery and refurbishment projects

To ensure best practice and leading methods are shared and developed for benefit across the water industry, BIM4Water’s 4D & Beyond was formed to develop and support in this specialist technical area.

The group supports the sector focus on providing inclusive visual technologies to better engage and communicate critical information to individuals.

4D supportive EIR

The capabilities of 4D to support collaborative working practices, storyboard methodologies and safe systems of work and support project delivery office insights through robust programme management make it an ideal solution.

At a glance, 4D modelling is a process that aids collaborative planning and programme ownership. It identifies the most efficient, safe and commercially viable method to construct and commission a project.

In order to realise and capture the benefits of this process, the right environment is necessary. A facilitated workshop focused on model-based planning or project rehearsal is recommended to develop the initial programme.

Rodrigue Kemgne, task group chair, formerly of Binnies, tells us about the focus of the task group to date and celebrates the achievement of publishing the following documents:

Supporting 4D in Project Delivery Using Exchange Information Requirements (EIR).
4D Level on Information Need (LOIN) Table Application Matrix, including the H&S benefits at each stage.

“We wanted to create resources that support the current challenges of the sector; these are understanding the 4D information requirements at a fundamental level and, in parallel, create an understanding of the value added through H&S benefits, in readiness for the launch of AMP8,” Rodrigue said.

Amy Farrell of Arup, the task group’s vice-chair, added: “The EIR can risk being viewed as an open wishlist for clients who may not have expertise around the benefits of 4D and visualisation applications.

“The aim was to develop a 4D supportive EIR which provides that technical insight and level of information requirements when applying adoption to the project delivery lifecycle in order to support collaboration, manage expectations and the delivery of water sector projects.”

Pawel Krecz of KREBO said: “As an active member of the group and a consultant in the field, I work with clients, helping to define their success plans and strategy, getting the foundations of what they need to achieve it, and deliver.

“These documents will help them to define the process, making them capable clients in the water sector.”

5D adoption

The task group will be next focusing on guidance for enabling 5D adoption, this will be available by end of 2024.
