Populous unveils design for 2034 World Cup stadium in Saudi Arabia

The Aramco Stadium, named after the state-owned oil company, will host games for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup and is designed to meet FIFA’s stadium criteria, with plans to host matches at the 2034 World Cup up until the quarter-final stage.

The development will also contain other sports facilities, shops, entertainment areas, e-gaming hubs and public space.

Populous’ stadium design is inspired by its surroundings on the shore of the Arabian Gulf, with a roof featuring spiralling translucent fins that curve over one another.

The flowing roof allows natural light into the interior, with the form imitated in spiralling ramps and walkways that lead fans to their seats.

Audience capacity can be extended to 55,000 for special events.

The stadium will use a cooling system for players and spectators.

Shireen Hamdan, Populous Saudi Arabia’s general manager, said: “The building’s open design invites the community to gather, celebrate and create lasting memories, making it a symbol of Al Khobar’s rich heritage and vibrant future. The design will become iconic in the football world and will be synonymous with Saudi Arabia’s vision.”

The Aramco Stadium is due to be completed in 2026.

Populous has also designed the 45,000-capacity Mohammed Bin Salman Stadium, also due to host matches at the 2034 World Cup. It will be located in the 50ha Qiddiya City district, planned in Riyadh’s outskirts.
