BBC brickies firm went down owing £2m to suppliers

A construction firm featured in a BBC series about young bricklayers went under owing nearly £2m to subcontractors and suppliers.

Hodgkinson Builders featured in the BBC Three docuseries  Brickies which ran for two seasons from 2022/23 following the lives of young recruits at the Derby-based contractor.

The firm went into administration last month and was acquired in a pre-pack deal by East Midlands Masonry Limited.

Robert Hodgkinson is a director of East Midlands Masonry Limited and the son of Ian Hodgkinson who is the owner of Hodgkinson Builders.

An administrator’s update filed at Companies House reveals East Midlands Masonry Limited paid £95,300 for the business.

The deal included the sale of all existing brickwork contracts and the new business now operates as East Midlands Masonry Limited, trading as Hodgkinsons.

The report details £11.8m of debts owed to unsecured creditors including £1.9m to the supply chain and £7m in inter-company loans.
