Dutch municipalities to build trailer parks to tackle housing crisis

In response to a worsening housing crisis, seven Dutch municipalities are moving ahead with plans to create flexible districts with prefabricated mobile homes, dubbed “flexcities”.

The districts will consist of 300 prefabs and 200 empty lots for people who already have mobile homes or can buy used ones, RTL Nieuws reports.

The municipalities are Goes, Doetinchem, Dronten, Enschede, Apeldoorn, Hollandse Kroon, and the mining region of Zuid-Limburg.

The Dutch government wants to create 4,300 of these districts between 2027 and 2029.

The idea for a Dutch version of the trailer park came out of a conference held between the Dutch government and representatives of the country’s construction industry in the town of Nieuwegein, in Utrecht.

All sides agreed that construction had to increase its output to hit the government’s target of 100,000 new homes a year.

The target has been in place for a number of years but has never been reached.

Nearly 90,000 homes were built in 2023 but, on average, the figure has been closer to 75,000.

According to the ABF consultancy, the Netherlands had a shortfall of around 400,000 homes in 2024, up from 390,000 in 2023 – the third consecutive annual rise.
