A 15.5km section of the Sydney metro has opened to the public. The line runs from the city’s northwest, under the harbour, through the central business district to the suburb of Sydenham.
The line, which has six stations, is part of a 51km route that connects to Chatswood, located 10km north of central Sydney.
Some 445 train-journeys will run on the line each weekday, transporting up to 34,000 passengers an hour during peak periods.
The Sydney Metro City project is being funded, designed and built by Cimic Group and its subsidiaries, which will also operate the route.
Jason Spears is managing director of one of those subsidiaries, CPB Contractors. He said: “Alongside the engineering and construction excellence that brought these metro projects to life, our team engaged more than 1,000 local businesses, including 1.2% indigenous or social enterprises.”
The Sydney Metro City section is to be extended a further 13km, terminating in Bankstown, and is due to be complete in 2025.
