Affordable seniors’ complex going up on church land in Nashville

Ground broke last week on an affordable housing development for seniors on land owned by a church in Nashville, Tennessee.

The collaboratively-funded initiative is billed as a model for more affordable, multi-family housing in the state.

The Northview complex will have 254 one- and two-bedroom units available to seniors earning between 40% and 80% of the area median income.

It’s being developed by The Clear Blue Company, owner of workforce and affordable multi-family housing, affordable real estate firm Urban Campus and Core, and Born Again Church, on church land on West Trinity Lane in North Nashville.

It will have a fitness centre, a rooftop deck, walking trails and recreational spaces.

Tennessee State University will offer skills training and health education.

Designed by STG Design and Thomas & Hutton, and built by Bacar Constructors, Northview is slated for completion in December 2026.

The project is funded in part through Amazon’s Housing Equity Fund and the Nashville metropolitan government’s Barnes Housing Trust Fund.

The Tennessee Housing Development Agency provided $43.9m in tax credits and $53m in Multi-Family Tax Exempt Bonds.

“We hope this will serve as an example of how developers can successfully partner with faith-based institutions to provide affordable housing in communities where it is most in need,” said The Clear Blue Company president Matthew Nicholson.

Nashville mayor Freddie O’Connell said: “As the Housing Division rolls out the Unified Housing Strategy and the new Faith Based Development Initiative later this year, we hope to see more partnerships like this.”
