A Chinese company has connected the world’s biggest solar plant to the grid in northwestern Xinjiang, Reuters reports.
The 3.5GW, 32,947-acre farm is in a desert area near the capital Urumqi.
It was built by the Power Construction Corp of China.
It can generate 6.09 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity a year, enough to power the country of Papua New Guinea.
The two previous biggest solar farms were also in western China.
With lots of wind and sun, sparsely populated Xinjiang has become a hub for renewable power, which gets transmitted to China’s densely populated eastern seaboard.
