Discovering the Benefits of Pigging: An Interview with Peter Elgar

Peter Elgar is the Executive Chairman of HPS Product Recovery Solutions, a leading company which specialises in Advanced Pigging Technology. Peter has been helping manufacturers streamline their liquid production processes.

What is pigging, and why is it important?

When asked about the advantages of his advanced liquid recovery systems, Peter is quick to point many food and drink manufacturers simply aren’t aware of what pigging can actually do for them. What they don’t know could be costing them thousands of pounds in waste.

Peter explained: “in simple terms, pigging is a technology used to recover liquid product from pipelines that would otherwise be thrown away. It’s especially useful for FMCG manufacturers who deal with liquids like sauces, juices, creams, and syrups.”

Peter has encountered so many manufacturers are losing profit because they don’t realise what gets left behind in their pipes after production runs. Pigging makes a lot of existing waste avoidable, as a great deal of it can be recovered instead.

“Manufacturers need to ask: Do I know how much profit are I am washing down the drain every day?”

Peter continues, “pigging systems use a specially designed ‘pig’ which is a flexible device that moves through the pipeline, pushing the remaining liquid out. This means less waste, more product to sell, and a much cleaner production process overall.”

He put a thought-provoking question to manufacturers, “If you could recover 99.5% of the liquid from your pipes, wouldn’t you want to? What would that mean for your bottom line?”

Saving money whilst saving the environment:

Beyond just cost savings, Peter highlights other benefits. “Pigging systems also reduce water usage and cleaning chemicals, which is great for the environment. Plus, they help cut down on cleaning times, so production can keep moving. And because the systems are automated, there’s less chance for human error or accidents.”

He wraps up with a challenge for manufacturers: “If you’re in the food and drink industry and not using pigging, ask yourself why. Are you really okay with wasting product, time, and money? Or is it time to explore a smarter solution?”

Peter’s insights clearly show that pigging isn’t just about recovering lost product—it’s about revolutionising the way manufacturers think about efficiency, sustainability, and profitability.
