The European Investment Bank (EIB) has approved a €100m tranche of funding for the Laakso hospital complex in Helsinki, bringing the total amount loaned to €480m.
The scope of work includes the construction and renovation of hospital buildings.
It will bring together psychiatric and neurological centres, as well as rehabilitation, geriatric and palliative care wards, and will create an 800m-long tunnel to Helsinki University Hospital.
Areas dedicated to mental health, neurology, outpatients, a drug-addiction centre and an eating-disorders department will be created.
The hospital serves the 1.7 million residents of Helsinki’s Uusimaa region.
Thomas Östros, EIB’s vice-president, said: “Supporting investments in hospitals and healthcare infrastructure is a key pillar of our health and life sciences portfolio.
“The support for Laakso Joint Hospital will improve healthcare in the wider Helsinki region and contribute to a more resilient community.”
The hospital is due to be completed by 2030.
