Former Balfour Beatty Regional Building boss Lindsay McGibbon has died just weeks after leaving the business.
The contractor announced McGibbon would be stepping down in November.
The Enquirer understands he had lined-up a new role in Saudi Arabia to work on a skyscraper at the £40bn Murabba project.
But he fell ill just before Christmas after being diagnosed with cancer and died earlier this month.
A stunned friend said: “We had worked together before and he was set to come out here and join the project.
“I spoke to him after the Balfour announcement and he was looking forward to his new role.
“This has all happened so suddenly and is so sad.”
McGibbon joined Balfour Beatty from Laing O’Rourke at the end of 2020 after 16 years with the business where he oversaw the firm’s central section Thames Super Sewer contract and its Quebec hospital job.
At Balfour, more recently he had responsibility for navigating and closing out several legacy building projects.
His funeral will be held in Surrey next month.
