Enabling highway works to start in the autumn
Plans for a new £100m rail station in Liverpool’s Baltic Triangle have been approved, paving the way for construction to begin early in 2026.
Liverpool City Council has granted planning permission for the landmark scheme, which will extend the Merseyrail Northern Line into one of the UK’s fastest-growing creative and digital quarters.
Highways works around the site are due to get underway this autumn ahead of the main station build, with the new stop expected to open by the end of 2027.
The station forms a key part of Mayor Steve Rotheram’s £1bn plan to deliver a London-style integrated transport system across the Liverpool City Region. It follows the recent £80m Headbolt Lane station opening and will be followed by new stations at Daresbury, Woodchurch and Carr Mill.
Mayor Rotheram said: “This is another step in our vision to build a fully integrated London-style transport system. We’re extending Merseyrail to more communities with future stations already planned in Daresbury, Woodchurch and Carr Mill. I believe good quality public transport is a right, not a privilege.”
Backed by strong public support in consultation, the new station will include step-free access, toilets, secure bike storage and links into the city’s growing active travel network. It will be funded through the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement.
