Henning Larsen designs new home for Faroese rowing: Klaksvik Row Club

At the heart of Henning Larsen’s urban plan for Klaksvík is a new landmark celebrating Faroese sports heritage, the Klaksvik Row Club Featuring state-of-the-art amenities for athletes, the club invites both locals and visitors with its stunning views of the surrounding landscapes.

Nestled within a scenic fjord that provides shelter from the Atlantic winds and offers vistas of nearby islands, Klaksvík is the Faroe Islands’ second-largest town, home to 5,000 residents. Over the past decade, the town, renowned as the fishery capital of the Faroe Islands, has been transforming its urban identity.

Henning Larsen Architects is listed in our “Best architecture firms in Denmark“. Its dynamic urban design, initiated in 2018, focuses on creating adaptable spaces, prioritizing pedestrian access, and introducing lively attractions like a children’s skating rink and the row club near the central plaza.

The Klaksvik Row Club has become a pivotal element of the town’s rejuvenated identity. Rowing, the Faroe Islands’ national sport, is deeply embedded in Faroese culture, with athletes dedicating significant time to year-round training and competitions.

The traditional wooden Faroese boats, handcrafted with a single axe and dating back to Viking times, are a cherished part of this heritage and are recognized on the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The sloping green roof and timber façade echo the natural beauty and traditional architecture of the Faroe Islands, creating a harmonious dialogue between the built environment and the fjord landscape” says Ósbjørn Jacobsen, Design Director, Faroe Islands, Henning Larsen Architects.

The 620 m² clubhouse emphasizes both functionality and enjoyment. Its sloping green roof and timber façade blend seamlessly with the surrounding landscape and honor traditional Faroese design. For efficient boat launches, large doors open from the storage area onto the wooden dock, facilitating easy transitions to and from the water. Boats are swiftly and safely stored in a compact compartment within the building.

Inside, the open timber architecture offers ample space for training sessions, as well as a welcoming spot for shared coffee breaks and relaxation. Large windows and a loft area provide expansive scenic views and natural light, whether during workouts or casual visits.

The clubhouse also functions as a public venue for various events and exhibitions and serves as a notable tourist attraction, showcasing the traditional craftsmanship of Faroese boat-making.

In warmer months, the outdoor area becomes a lively gathering space, complete with a café, adding vibrancy to this city corner.
