Jacobs wins station upgrades amid New York’s accessibility blitz

Jacobs is overseeing a $227.5m project to upgrade three stations on the busy Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) for the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA).

The design-build contract involves bringing Babylon, Forest Hills, and Hollis stations into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act 1990 (ADA).

It’s one of many ADA-related station upgrades the MTA plans across its subway and commuter rail systems after reaching an agreement with disability advocates in 2022 to make at least 95% of currently inaccessible New York City subway system stations accessible by 2055.

Its 2020-2024 Capital Programme includes making 67 additional subway stations accessible.

Eight LIRR stations will be upgraded.

Automatic ice-melting

Babylon Station is a heavily used junction. It will get two new elevators.

A pair of escalators will be rehabilitated and another pair will be replaced.

Other work at Babylon includes replacing two centre island platforms, replacing the platform canopy and lighting, and installing an automatic ice-melting system on the platforms.

As programme manager, Jacobs will oversee construction, commercial and risk management, and design compliance.

Work is scheduled to finish in 2026.

LIRR serves nearly 260,000 customers daily.

“As the busiest commuter rail system in North America, Long Island Rail Road provides essential mobility to Long Island and the wider New York City metropolitan area,” said Jacobs Senior Vice President Chrissy Thom.
