The project will be influenced by a national survey that collated responses from 20,000 people, including members of every military branch and veterans of every war since WWII. The results showed that 80% wanted the memorial lit at night, 70% hoped it would have an intimate setting and 60% asking for surrounding green space.

Kuma will work with other members of the Design Advisory Council who will contribute to the memorial’s aesthetic. He said: “My passion for this project stems from my personal connection to 9/11 when I lost a dear friend.

“This memorial will help the entire world contemplate the war of global significance that has followed that day of sorrow and the experiences of those who have participated in it.

“Together, I am confident that we will create an enduring tribute to the men and women who have answered the call to protect Americans and the world from terrorism.”
