Kier has clinched a job to build a new teaching block as part of the £47m redevelopment of London South East Colleges’ Greenwich Campus.
The firm will demolish an existing building to build a 60,000 sq ft, five-storey teaching facility on the south east London site under a deal estimated to be worth around £30m.
Alongside classrooms, there will be wellbeing spaces as well as specialist rooms to aid student interests, including a Mac studio, a training kitchen and learning resource centre.
To achieve a BREAAM Outstanding rating, the building will include rooftop air source heat pumps combined with a highly efficient ambient loop heating and cooling system. There will also be a rooftop array of photovoltaic panels.
The campus will remain open and operational throughout the project, which was awarded through the Procure Partnership Framework.
David Rowsell, managing director at Kier Construction London, said the firm was well-placed to deliver the sustainability features thanks to its end-to-end capabilities, including in-house design, decarbonisation and MEP engineering expertise.
The overall £47m project is being supported by the Royal Borough of Greenwich, the Greater London Authority and the Department for Education with 294 new homes being built on the site, with 50% designated as affordable housing.
