Korean firm to help with Ecuador’s new international airport

The company that built and now operates the world’s fifth biggest passenger airport – Korea’s Incheon International – will develop a plan for a new airport and special economic zone in Ecuador, business website Maeil reports

It’s planned for Ecuador’s biggest city, Guayaquil, which is also home to Simón Bolivar Port, which handles 70% of Ecuador’s seaborne trade.

The long-planned new airport would replace Ecuador’s José Joaquín de Olmedo International, also at Guayaquil, which is approaching peak capacity.

The Guayaquil Airport Authority wants “Guayaquil New Airport” to have an annual capacity of 7 million passengers in the first phase, rising to 16 million later.

Lee Hak-jae, president of Incheon International Airport Corporation, said his company would draw up a masterplan for the new airport, oversee its design and construction, and then run it.

He said the project would “lay the foundation for future public-private partnership projects and Latin American airports”.

South Korea is promoting New Guayaquil airport as part of its “Economic Innovation Partnership Program”, which seeks opportunities for Korean firms in developing countries.

Incheon will spend 10 months working on a development model and will provide technical and policy advice based on its experience in Korea.
