MPD Construction lands major HS2 concrete deal

Contractor helps design new dynamic formwork system

MPD Construction Group has landed another major HS2 deal to install 32 kilometres of concrete walkway in the Northolt Tunnel between Old Oak Common station and West Ruislip.

MPD will be installing its Bridgeform system designed in collaboration with partners KERN Tunneltechnik.

The ground-breaking dynamic formwork system is fully automated and hydraulically operated.

Work will start in May for main contractor SCS Railways to deliver and install 60,000 cubic metres of concrete with a peak workforce of 125 on site.

MPD Managing Director Liam McManus said: “This is a bespoke solution to a problem which needed solving on HS2 and is exactly the sort of job we specialise in.”

It is the latest win for MPD on HS2 and extends a partnership which stretches back to 2019.

Mcmanus added: “Our design intention from the outset was simple. To generate a bespoke solution that provided our client with three key non-negotiables. Safety, Quality and Certainty.

“The solution had to enable unrestricted emergency egress from both tunnels.

“The design had to mitigate the need for single sub-contractor tunnel exclusivity, and the system had to achieve the outputs required from the programme. Bridgeform delivers all of this.

“Our investment and collaboration with Kerns has been nearly 12 months in the making and we’re delighted with the outcome.”
