Sisk has been appointed to deliver the new Children’s Cancer Centre for Great Ormond Street Hospital, with completion forecast for 2028
The Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity is supporting the project as part of their ‘Build it. Beat it.’ appeal.
The appeal is aimed at raising £300m to build the Children’s Cancer Centre which will transform and upgrade cancer care, and save lives.
The development will replace the current centre located in some of the older buildings.
The building will allow all the cancer services to be located together across four floors, helping clinicians by reducing travel distances between departments and allowing treatments to evolve in a child-focused environment.
4D design methods will be used to ensure compliance with the Building Safety Act
The building is being prepared digitally in 4D in the planning phase, and the design is fully compliant with the Building Safety Act, making this the first hospital to go through this process.
The clinical building will remain on Great Ormond Street, and a new front entrance and welcome area will be created for the hospital as a whole.
It is planned to be a little under 19,000 square metres, and be designed to give, and be equipped for, the highest possible quality paediatric care and research.
New jobs, apprenticeships and work placements will be created with Sisk
When Sisk moves to the construction phase, 500 people will be employed to work on the building, including launching 37 apprenticeships and 20 work placements for local students.
Ger Hayes, managing director at Sisk said: “It’s an incredible honour to be entrusted with building the new Children’s Cancer Centre at Great Ormond Street Hospital. We’re making significant progress in the healthcare sector both in Ireland and the UK and we fully appreciate that Great Ormond Street Hospital is one of the world’s leading children’s healthcare providers. As a family-owned business, we take immense pride in creating lasting legacies within the communities we serve and we are fully motivated to deliver a best-in-class cancer centre for GOSH and the families they support.”
Mat Shaw, chief executive of GOSH, said: “I am delighted that we are now in contract with Sisk and building work on our fantastic new Children’s Cancer Centre is underway. Reflecting our ambition to put the child first and always, the CCC will help our staff be their best and enable children to play, learn and be with their families even while at hospital.”
A wave of hospital construction is coming
This announcement comes shortly after it was revealed that the New Hospitals Programme – while delayed substantially for many projects – has been confirmed to remain in motion, with several new hospitals and extensions to hospitals planned for construction over the next decade.
This includes projects in Milton Keynes, Cornwall, North Manchester, and many more.
