Sweco wins €35m contract to plan major Stockholm rail upgrade

Stockholm-headquartered consultant Sweco has won a €35m contract from the Swedish Transport Administration to plan a major rail-capacity upgrade on the busy East Coast Line between Uppsala and Stockholm.

Over the next 11 years, Sweco will prepare plans and tender documents for the “Four-tracks Uppsala” programme, which will add two more tracks to the 23km two-track line, plus a new station in the town of Bergsbrunna and an expanded Uppsala Central Station.

The regions around Uppsala and Stockholm are growing fast, and the two-track rail corridor now has reached capacity both for passenger and freight traffic.

Sweco will also advise on associated road works, grade separations, water and sewage, as well as the two extra tracks.

Construction on the first phase is expected to start in 2026.

Sweco’s business area president Ann-Louise Lökholm Klasson said: “It will be possible to transport more freight in a climate-smart manner and, for passengers, the expansion will result in more punctual trains, more departures and more convenient sustainable travel.”
