Tyne Coast College put firms on alert for £60m campus job

Tyne Coast College is progressing with plans to invite bids for an £60m campus development in South Shields.

Plans to relocate South Tyneside College and South Shields Marine School from its current Westoe site into the heart of the town centre have already been approved.

The project will consist of a 14,000 sq ft main building with a double-height glass atrium and central courtyard .

A Grade II-listed building on Barrington Street will retained to be converted into staff accommodation and facilities housing the South Shields Marine School.

The job also involves a 140-bed student accommodation block on the site of the former Central Library on Prince Georg Square.

Designed by architect ID Partnership, low carbon technology including sustainable heating systems, solar panels and green roofs will be incorporated into the build.

The client team included MEP engineer Castle Building Services, cost consultant AtkinsRealis and structural engineer WSP.

Developer Avant Homes plans to demolish the existing outdated facilities on the current college site at Westoe and build up to 260 homes.

Interested contractors must register on the procurement agent Constellia’s website www.constellia.net by 14 October and should email Hanna Worth (quoting ref TCC001) for more information.

Constellia will then compile a list of potential contractors to tender by way of mini-competition for the works, which may be tendered in one lot or multiple lots as required by the College.
