Dundee City Council has granted planning permission for Eden Project Dundee, to be built on the brownfield site of the former gasworks on East Dock Street

Eden Project Dundee works will see the conversion of the existing gasholder, demolition of other buildings on the site and the construction of a pedestrian bridge.

The project will combine exhibits, performance, learning, play, immersive experiences, world-class horticulture, live music, art, and food, beverage and retail spaces.

The Eden Project is working in partnership with Dundee City Council, The Northwood Charitable Trust and the University of Dundee.

Developing the brownfield area around the River Tay

Led by the Eden Project’s Experience Development team, the design team has worked with Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, Nicoll Russell Studios, Expedition, Gross Max, AECOM, Art of Fact, Charcoal Blue, WSP, Atelier 10 and Buro Happold as part of the development process.

The Eden Project also hosted events across the city seeking community feedback, which was then incorporated into the plans.

The project is estimated to create 200 direct jobs and support 300 supply chain roles, with construction works bringing £27m to Dundee’s local economy.

The Eden Project Dundee will bring “hundreds” of jobs

Dundee City Council leader, Councillor John Alexander, said: “The Eden Project is a further example of the city’s ambitious regeneration drive.

“The project will help deliver hundreds of jobs, huge visitor numbers and tens of millions of pounds for the local economy. But it will also provide new educational opportunities and seek to build work on efforts within our communities, well beyond the site boundary.

“It will attract people from far and wide, as well as being very much for the citizens of Dundee. It was great to see so many locals helping to shape the proposals which were approved tonight.

“The planning process is only one part of a much longer journey, however. All partners are aware that the hard work really starts now to ensure that we make this world-class, transformative project a reality.”
