William Baker-Jones has returned to Kier as digital construction lead for its Natural Resources, Nuclear and Networks division (NRNN).
Baker-Jones worked at Babcock International for the past four years, where he rose from project BIM lead/principal BIM and digital engineer to deputy head of BIM and digital engineering.
The NRNN division’s work at Kier is typically long-term projects with staff allocated to those projects. Thus, as Baker-Jones explained, he won’t have a team reporting to him directly, but will be responsible for ensuring consistency of digital delivery across the projects. “My role is to oversee the consistency across the business, so that we can take lessons learned from, say, Hinckley or Thames Water, and cascade that across the business,” he told BIMplus.
Neil Pattinson, head of business excellence for NNRN, oversees the division’s digital strategy. He said: “I’m delighted to welcome Will back to Kier to lead the delivery of our digital construction plans across the division at an exciting time for our business. Will’s knowledge, skills and experience, and especially his enthusiasm and drive, will be invaluable as we grow our business to deliver for our clients.”
The NRNN division is part of Kier Infrastructure, and Baker-Jones will lead the recertification of the division’s BSI kitemark.
Ownership and leadership
Reflecting on the move from Babcock, he said: “I’m still quite young – I’m only 29 – so it’s a natural step for me [to progress]. I wanted something more to own and to lead.”
Kier has been a key part of his digital construction journey. He first came across the company while working at Ercle Architecture, after completing his architecture degree at the University of Plymouth. He joined Kier Construction in 2018 as BIM coordinator, rising to senior BIM coordinator, before joining Babcock in 2021.
Baker-Jones is keen to share his learnings at industry functions, but the sensitivity of Babcock’s work limited his opportunities to share. “I like to present things, at Digital Construction Week and events like that,” he said. “Being in Babcock, I was quite limited in what I could say, and I like to share things through nima, GIIG and buildingSmart UK & Ireland. So that was part of the decision-making: I’ve been given the green light by Kier to present and share,” he said.
